ANAHUAC — The common-law wife of a man who shot and killed a Chambers County deputy faces two additional charges in connection with the July standoff.

Pamela Leggett-Ortez now has a total of 15 indictments against her, which could mean up to 170 years in prison if she is convicted.

The latest two indictments are for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The standoff with police and Gilbert Ortez Jr. — the man police say shot and killed Chambers County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Detwiler before killing himself during a 10-hour standoff on July 13 — began when Leggett-Ortez allegedly shot at two meter readers with Monarch Utilities.

A meter reader reported Leggett- Ortez fired shots while the employee attempted to shut off the water to Ortez and Leggett-Ortez’s trailer.

The two readers had been there several times because the water had already been cut off but Leggett kept breaking the locks and stealing the water.

Three Chambers County Sheriff’s deputies and a highway patrolman responded to the call and were able to arrest Leggett-Ortez outside the residence. Sheriff LaRive said officers then entered the home.

While inside, the four officers came under fire. Detwiler died after receiving two gunshot wounds to the head. Another officer dragged Detwiler from the home and ducked down for cover until the Baytown Police Department’s SWAT team came to the rescue.

Police said Ortez then took his own life.
