Sterling finally discovered West Brook’s weakness Friday night its punter.
But it was much too little way too late as the Beaumont Bruins wound up a 2009 Stallworth Stadium sweep of Baytown teams with a 55-16 win over the Rangers.
West Brook didn’t punt once in a 45-0 win over Robert E. Lee two weeks ago and only 1:19 remained Friday when Bruin Dominick O’Neal got his first call against either teams and responded with an 18-yarder.
But perhaps he was worn out after eight extra-point kicks.
By that time, the District 21-5A leaders had worn out another Baytown defense with another 400-yard-plus offensive performance.
Jeremy Cooper carried the ball only seven times for the Bruins but gained 103 yards and scored three touchdowns. WB quarterback Bruce Reyes passed for 228 yards and a pair of scores to Jacolby Cunigan.
West Brook had a total offense of 438 yards, 210 coming on the ground. Sterling had 98 yards rushing, led by Nelson’s 58 yards and 55 from C.J. Mixon, and quarterback Colton Kolaja completed 12 of 31 passes for 98 yards, with two interceptions. Nelson caught five passes for 46 yards.
To think, it was still a game at halftime as Sterling trailed just 21-10 after putting together two long scoring drives.
“We didn’t get started as fast as we wanted to in the second half,” Sterling coach Herb Minyard said. “We got the ball and had to punt. They got the ball and scored.
“Then it snowballed from there.”
Taking advantage of three Sterling turnovers, West Brook scored five straight second-half touchdowns and led 55-10 before Chance Nelson
