HOUSTON — For those seeking a high school girls basketball fix, the Don Coleman Coliseum was the place to be Saturday night. A free throw by Humble’s Taujhnae Travis with 13 seconds remaining broke a 68-68 deadlock and proved to be the difference as the white team walked away with a 69-68 win in the Fourth Annual .

The free throw was set up on a pass by Sterling’s Shaye Montgomery. Montgomery gained control of a loose ball and drove down the left baseline passing to Travis who was fouled on a shot attempt. The point capped a five-point rally by the white team.

“It feels good ending on a win,” Montgomery said. “It was an interesting game. It reminded me a lot of our games this year, rallying late in the game.”

Crosby’s Tia Jackson was a member of a blue team that rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit and took control for most of the second half. Jackson finished the game with nine points.

“I was excited,” Jackson said. “It was good for the fans. I think I did pretty well, I was able to get my teammates involved. It bothers me that we lost, you always want to win. But the game was very, very fun. My teammates were excellent.”

Both Montgomery and Jackson drew starts for their respective teams. Both area players got involved early as Montgomery scooped the ball in from the left side of the lane to give the white team a 4-0 lead. Montgomery had four points on the night.

The White team took a 33-22 lead before the Blue team was able to settle down. Consecutive 3-pointers by Meghan Lewis jumpstarted a 10-0 run which pulled the blue team within one. The White team took a five-point lead into the half but five early second half points by Spring’s Brittney Nelson tied the game up at 37.

The Blue team took their first lead of the game at 44-42 with 15:44 remaining on a 3-point play by Shameka Baines. The Blues ran the lead up as high as seven points. Late in the game the White team went to a press, which changed the complexion of the game and forced some turnovers.

Ksharna Kenniebrew scored four points in a row in the paint to tie the game up and set the stage for the free throw by Travis to win the game.

The White team was coached by Westfield’s Susan Smith, and there were five players in the game representing District 22-5A.

Crosby’s Jackson has one more All-Star game remaining, as she will participate in the TABC All-Star game in San Antonio.
