Crystal Fain and her four children have only lived in Baytown for a few months and a fire in the house she was renting Thursday took everything they own.
Fain, 26, and daughters Alyssa, Marissa, Clara and Sidney barely made it out alive and now they need help. Fain said the “world dropped out” from under her when she realized she couldn’t find her youngest daughter, 18-month-old Sidney, during the fire.
“I started screaming trying to wake her up so she would make a noise,” Fain said. “Thank God my brother found her — he carried her out upside down.”
Fain’s oldest kids, 5-year-old twins Alyssa and Marissa are about to start school and their mom said she hoped she could get stability for them soon. The problem is Fain has no idea how she is going to get a fresh start.
“When you have four little ones and you are trying to start up, it is hard,” Fain said. “One of my babies asked me for a hair barrette (Friday) and I started crying because I didn’t have one.”
Fain said it has been hard as she comes to the realization that she and her children have lost everything. The fire burned everything inside the house and it melted the tires and doors of her car. The fire started from an extension cord in the girl’s room.
“We had two extension cords hooked together and too much connected to it, caught the carpet on fire,” Fain said. “I cannot believe how quick it went up.”
Fain and her girls are staying at her brother’s house in Channelview for the moment and the girl’s grandmother is going to take them to her house for a while until Fain can get back on her feet. Fain said the American Red Cross is helping her with clothing, but she needs furniture. Eventually, she will need a place to live as well.
“You can’t find many people out there who are going to let you stay with them when you have 4 little girls,” Fain said. “I keep asking my mom how you just start over — I don’t even know where to begin.”
May Montalbo, a neighbor, is organizing the assistance for Fain and her little girls. To make a contribution, call Montalbo at 832-556-1771 and ask for May or Jessica.
